Rob Reiner and Jubilant Sykes – Two iconic men allegedly murdered by their adult sons
Two iconic fathers with adult, mentally health challenged sons. Movie director and actor Rob Reiner and renowned gospel, opera, and jazz singer Jubilant Sykes were both allegedly killed by their grown sons, a week apart, in the Los Angeles area.
The tragedies are similar in that the suspects are the victims' own children. Both young men, in their 30s, have substance abuse, addiction and mental health issues, including schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder.
Police say both men wielded knives on their parents, a particularly savage method of domestic violence.
The cases differ in that Nick Reiner allegedly slaughtered his mother, Michele Singer Reinger, too. Micah Sykes spared his mom, but CeCe Sykes witnessed him allegedly murder his dad.
Adding to the cruelty of the crimes, the Reiners and Jubilant Sykes were killed in their own homes during December right around the holidays.
Gulf Coast Confidential Podcast host Pam Hill knows first hand what it's like to lose a loved one to a violent, unprovoked attack at the hands of your own child.
Pam's sister Sharon Aydelott was brutally stabbed, beaten, and stomped in the doorway of her Gulf Breeze home on Christmas Eve 2013 by her own son, Brandon Aydelott.
His family says he also struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity for his mother's homicide and continues to work his way through the system and is now in a group home.
